Éric Mougenot, dit Mouge, découvre la peinture à l’âge de 16 ans, en 1980, au lycée Saint-Joseph de Dijon. Guidé par un professeur de dessin d’art, il réalise alors ses premières expériences picturales. Très vite, il comprend que la création artistique devient pour lui une nécessité profonde, un langage essentiel qui transformera durablement sa vie.

Dès ses 18 ans, animé par une détermination farouche, il consacre toutes ses économies à cette aventure artistique. Autodidacte et entièrement autonome, il prend rapidement conscience de ses capacités. Il participe à plusieurs expositions collectives, puis présente trois expositions personnelles successives au Grenier, salle d’exposition de la ville de Talant, entre 1990 et 1992. Le public comme la critique saluent alors son travail.
Malgré ses premiers succès, Mouge interrompt son parcours artistique pour reprendre ses études et saisir une opportunité professionnelle. Ce qui devait être une pause temporaire se transforme en une longue parenthèse de près de trente ans. Une période qu’il décrit comme une « abstinence artistique », durant laquelle il accumule inconsciemment images, idées, sensations et émotions, mais aussi une frustration profonde liée à l’impossibilité de créer. 

En 2020, il accepte l’évidence : son chemin est celui de la peinture. Dès lors, tout s’accélère. Il décide de s’y consacrer pleinement, avec la certitude que rien ne pourra désormais l’arrêter.
Si son style a évolué au fil du temps, son inspiration demeure intacte. Elle puise sa source dans ses émotions et dans son ressenti face aux événements du monde, proches ou lointains. Ses nombreux voyages et rencontres à travers différents pays nourrissent également son univers pictural. La métaphore est au cœur de son travail, lui permettant de traduire symboliquement ses perceptions et questionnements.

Mouge revendique l’influence de Van Gogh pour la générosité de ses couleurs, de Bernard Buffet pour la force expressive de ses personnages et paysages soulignés de traits sombres, et de Francis Bacon pour son audace à représenter le vivant jusque dans sa fragilité et sa déchéance.
Toutefois, c’est l’art du Moyen Âge qui demeure sa principale source d’inspiration. Sculptures, peintures, temperas sur bois et surtout vitraux religieux l’attirent par leur apparente simplicité, parfois leur naïveté, et par la puissance symbolique de leurs icônes aux couleurs flamboyantes.

Depuis 2023, Mouge a renoué avec le chemin des expositions personnelles, notamment à Claix, à Grenoble, à la galerie Cadr’Art à Dijon où il est exposé en permanence, ainsi qu’à l’Hôtel de Vogüé en 2025. Il participe également au salon de L’ESSOR, dont il devient sociétaire en 2024 puis président un an plus tard.

Fidèle à la peinture à l’huile fine sur toile de lin, Mouge affectionne les formats figure et carré. Il travaille sans croquis préparatoires : seule la toile blanche guide son inspiration. Après une esquisse au fusain, il construit ses fonds à l’acrylique très diluée, définissant les zones de tension, d’ombre et de lumière. À l’huile, il façonne ensuite l’œuvre couche après couche, jouant des empâtements et des glacis. Il décrit volontiers son processus créatif comme un chemin long et tumultueux :


Éric Mougenot, known as Mouge, discovered painting at the age of 16 in 1980, while attending Saint-Joseph High School in Dijon. Guided by an art drawing teacher, he carried out his first pictorial experiments. Very quickly, he realized that artistic creation had become a profound necessity for him—an essential language that would permanently transform his life.
From the age of 18, driven by fierce determination, he devoted all his savings to this artistic adventure. Self-taught and entirely independent, he soon became aware of his own abilities. He took part in several group exhibitions, then presented three successive solo exhibitions at Le Grenier, the exhibition hall of the city of Talant, between 1990 and 1992. Both the public and critics praised his work.
Despite these early successes, Mouge interrupted his artistic journey to resume his studies and seize a professional opportunity. What was meant to be a temporary pause turned into a long hiatus of nearly thirty years. He describes this period as an “artistic abstinence,” during which he unconsciously accumulated images, ideas, sensations, and emotions, along with a deep frustration caused by the inability to create. In 2020, he accepted the obvious: his path was painting. From that moment on, everything accelerated. He decided to devote himself to it fully, with the certainty that nothing could stop him anymore.
While his style has evolved over time, his inspiration remains intact. It draws its source from his emotions and his responses to world events, both near and far. His many travels and encounters across different countries also nourish his pictorial universe. Metaphor lies at the heart of his work, allowing him to translate his perceptions and questions symbolically.
Mouge acknowledges the influence of Van Gogh for the generosity of his colors, Bernard Buffet for the expressive power of his figures and landscapes emphasized by dark lines, and Francis Bacon for his boldness in depicting life in all its fragility and decay. However, it is medieval art that remains his primary source of inspiration. Sculptures, paintings, tempera on wood, and especially religious stained glass attract him through their apparent simplicity—sometimes their naïveté—and through the symbolic power of their icons with blazing colors.
Since 2023, Mouge has returned to the path of solo exhibitions, notably in Claix, in Grenoble, at the Cadr’Art Gallery in Dijon—where his work is exhibited permanently—and at the Hôtel de Vogüé in 2025. He also participates in the L’ESSOR salon, becoming a member in 2024 and its president one year later.
Faithful to fine oil painting on linen canvas, Mouge favors figure and square formats. He works without preparatory sketches; only the blank canvas guides his inspiration. After a charcoal outline, he builds his backgrounds with highly diluted acrylic paint, defining areas of tension, shadow, and light. Using oil paint, he then shapes the work layer by layer, playing with impasto and glazes. He readily describes his creative process as a long and turbulent journey:
